But, at the same time, we must not lose sight of the power of the galvanised parent.
From the beginning, it has been parents who have shouted for childcare in their communities, safer playgrounds for their children and increased financial assistance with childcare. Now, despite increasing support from the Government, it is more important than ever that we engage parents to continue to loudly demand all kinds of improvements to their environment for the safety and enjoyment of their children - from children's centres and holiday schemes to speed bumps in roads and play zones.
The parents need to recognise that, as a group, they are a real force to be reckoned with, effecting change in their communities and showing their children what it is to have the ability to make a difference. National and local communication with parents needs to reiterate this - it's not just about informing and advising, but about empowering.
