Supporting parents and carers to balance their work and family lives has always been a crucial aspect of the childcare campaign.

Building on proposals in the 10-year childcare strategy, the Department for Trade and Industry has launched a major consultation, Work and Families: Choice and Flexibility, setting out a series of initiatives aimed at supporting parents who work, while demonstrating to employers that flexible working makes business sense.

Evidence shows that progressive work-life balance policies help make employees happier and more effective, which can help make businesses more profitable. Reduced staff turnover and absenteeism, contributing to improved productivity, are among the key gains for employers.

Parents are the biggest influence in their child's life, and the state has a positive role to play in enabling them to spend quality time together, especially at important developmental and transition stages. Too often parents feel it is impossible to work full-time and still raise a family successfully. But parents should not have to sacrifice their careers. Family friendly business policies make it possible to play a role in family life alongside pursuing a career.
