1 min read
New technologies can open up new gateways to learning and communication for children, but they also present an ever-increasing risk. It is now easier than ever for children to be approached by strangers via the internet or mobile phones. Children are also more likely to be exposed to adult content, scams such as ring-tone sales and internet bullying, bringing new dangers and stresses.

A recent survey by children's charity NCH and Tesco Telecoms shows thatchildren are increasingly at risk because their parents do not knowenough about the technology. The survey shows that more than half ofchildren are never or hardly ever supervised by their parents whenonline. More than a third of parents say they don't know how to denyaccess to specific web sites or install parental controls.

At the same time, at least half the children said they were able todisable parental controls and security software. 4Children's own Buzzsurvey this summer showed that 23 per cent of children had beenapproached by strangers either through the internet or on their mobilephone.
