Key tools in achieving this are the children and young people's plansthat local authorities have to complete by April 2006. As councils begintheir consultation and communication programmes we need to think bothcreatively and seriously about how we can engage and gain input fromchildren and young people. As communication and information channelsdevelop and children rapidly become masters of technology this is onearea that local authorities and others need to embrace.
Ninety per cent of 10-year-olds own a mobile phone or have access to theinternet. Interactive TV and chatrooms, email, blogging and downloadsare all embedded in our children's culture. If local authorities aregoing to consult with children, they need to do so in ways that areaccessible, meaningful and get the right outcomes.
