Policy & Practice: Policy into practice - A real chance to keepchildren out of care

1 min read
More than 60,000 children are currently in care in the UK. Of the 6,000 who will leave care this year, 4,500 will have no educational qualifications.

Within two years 3,000 of those 6,000 will be unemployed, 2,100 will bemothers or pregnant, 1,200 will be homeless, just 60 will make it touniversity and at least one in four will end up in prison. Thesestatistics illustrate the shocking reality for so many looked-afterchildren and the devastating deficit of positive outcomes in every areaof their lives.

The Government's green paper, Care Matters, provides a vital opportunityfor a new approach. Crucially, this includes the potential to offerjoined-up thinking, planning and services, pulling together GPs, healthvisitors, schools and social workers. It provides a real chance toconsider strategies that will reduce the need to place children in care.Where initiatives are already in place, they are having a profoundeffect.
