Policy & Practice: Policy into practice - Foster carers deserverecognition and support

1 min read
More than 70,000 children and young people are in public care every day in the UK. And more than 50,000 of them are cared for by dedicated and hardworking foster carers.

Children are placed into foster care for a myriad of complex reasons, from child protection to family emergencies. However, the number ofchildren needing care is much higher than the number of providers. TheFostering Network estimates that another 10,000 carers are needed, andthere can often be a lack of support for those who take on theburden.

Efforts have been made to support foster carers and recognise their keyrole. The Government is implementing a national minimum allowance forfoster parents. While this is a major step, more help is needed toprovide joined-up support for foster families. Foster carers look aftersome of the most vulnerable children in our society. Their job ischallenging and local authorities increasingly need not only to supportcarers but also to recruit more to take on this complex role.
