Policy into practice - Children of prisoners

The government estimates that around 150,000 children a year in England and Wales have a parent imprisoned - higher than the number of children who see their parents divorce. Despite this, the issue is not well recognised and there is a need for more support and provision to help families separated by prison.

Children of prisoners are three times more likely to develop mental health problems and experience higher levels of social exclusion. It is essential that we get behind initiatives that raise awareness of this often neglected policy area and support young people trying to deal with the wide range of difficulties that having a parent in prison presents.

CASE STUDY 1

Storybook Dads is a charity based at Dartmoor Prison that allows both mums and dads in prison to record stories for their children. The programme provides an easy way for children and parents to strengthen family ties through the provision of personalised story CDs and DVDs.
