Whether at home, in the park or adventure playground or at school, children love playing. But despite the broad benefits play brings, enhancing social skills, supporting emotional development, and helping children to stay healthy, play has historically been left out of new children's services developments.
In a major breakthrough, the Big Lottery Fund has announced a wave of new funding programmes, including 155m specifically for children's play.
With grants available in England to develop, create, improve, and design innovative children's play facilities with the aim of providing free local play provision for children and young people, play is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Now we must ensure that new play opportunities are fully integrated within the wider joined-up children's services structure.
