Calls about bullying to ChildLine went up by 12 per cent in a year, the charity said last week.

The helpline, run by the NSPCC, counselled 37,032 children about bullying between 1 April 2005 and 31 March 2006. A further 4,018 called for other reasons but went on to talk about bullying. The previous year, 32,688 children called to talk about bullying and a further 3,845 said bullying was an additional concern.

The majority of children who called about bullying in 2005-06, 54 per cent, were aged between 12 and 15; 41 per cent were 11 and under; and only five per cent were between 16 and 18 - a virtually identical breakdown to the year before.
