What steps should be taken to support an inexperienced teacher struggling to cope with a disruptive pupil on the verge of being excluded?

A year head explains how he supported the teacher and avoided excluding the child.

Our options were running out when it came to one 11-year-old girl, whose behaviour was growing steadily worse. Although the girl had not been diagnosed with a specific behavioural problem, she was very disruptive.

Her class teacher was struggling to cope as this one child was a catalyst for bad behaviour from other pupils. The young and relatively inexperienced teacher's ability to teach the rest of the class was being undermined and this was affecting her confidence.

We felt we had done everything we could to address any underlying reasons for the girl's behaviour, including working closely with her parents and signposting them to other support. But we'd reached the stage when we were seriously thinking about exclusion - a course no-one wanted.
