A club for after-school and out-of-school care introduced a healthyeating scheme, but parents and children continued to bring in unhealthyfood.
An out-of-school co-ordinator describes how the club handled thesituation.
Eighteen months ago, after consultation with children and parents, weintroduced a healthy eating scheme into our after-school andout-of-school care club. The club is for all young people aged four- to16-years-old.
The scheme involved providing balanced meals and cutting out sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks from the tuck shop and packed lunches. Weinformed all the parents and ran a one-week pilot. We checked packedlunches for unhealthy foods, replacing sweets with cereal bars and fizzydrinks with water.
Although the parents had generally been positive about introducinghealthy eating, we had problems stopping some of them from sendingunsuitable foods.
