THE DILEMMA

Would it be right to deny a man accused of serious domestic violence all contact with his children, even if the risks could be minimised? A senior duty and assessment practitioner recalls a lengthy debate about the right approach to take.

I was recently involved with a case relating to domestic violence and concerns about the care of the children. The alleged perpetrator was the father of the younger of the two children in the house. This child was less than a year old, the other was five.

The mother alleged she had been subjected to serious violence from her husband and this wasn't the first time it had happened. She had sustained numerous injuries. My enquiries revealed the husband had been in a previous relationship that featured domestic violence. He also had a criminal conviction for violence against an adult male.
