Could there be more to graffiti than a simple act of vandalism? A children's social worker in a duty and assessment team tells of a case when a spate of graffiti turned out to be a collective cry for help

After a member of staff at a school was arrested and sentenced for abuse, I was able to talk to the children about the complaints procedure and how easy it was for them to access the process that was in place.

The children all mentioned the role that had been played by graffiti in the school, which had reached almost epidemic proportions and had become institutional folklore. "Mr X is a pervert," was the writing on the wall.
