The population of Liverpool has a wide range of lifestyle characteristics.

On the one hand, a small percentage of the population of the city is well-educated, cosmopolitan and healthy. This group tends to have lower levels of diabetes. On the other hand, there are large numbers of low-income families who live on large council estates and have a higher risk of developing diabetes as a result of poor diet, inactive lifestyles and heavy smoking.

These groups are also at a higher than average risk of developing other long-term illnesses and permanent sickness.

- Source Actual admissions represent emergency hospital admissions for the financial years 2002-03 to 2004-05 combined. Expected admissions are calculated by applying the national rate to the population in each relevant local authority for the age group and condition selected. Data compiled for Young People Now by the Dr Foster unit at Imperial College, London (www.drfoster.co.uk). Area descriptions provided by Experian.
