Barking and Dagenham is home to a number of social groups especially prone to type two diabetes. Although the area has many hard-working owners of good-quality excouncil properties, poor diets with too much carbohydrate, fat and salt remain an issue. The other group prone to type two diabetes is the Asian community, and there is a significant Asian presence in Barking and Dagenham. The reasons for higher levels of type two diabetes among Asians have been well-documented: it is partially genetic but also down to higher concentrates of ghee in the diet from a young age.
