Policy & Practice: Four nations - Regulation of social care andsocial workers

ENGLAND

In April, the children's services arm of the Commission for Social CareInspection, the agency that has been inspecting social care services inEngland, will become part of Ofsted.

The changes are part of a reform of children's services inspections thatwill turn Ofsted from an education watchdog into the inspector of thewhole children's sector. Ofsted will register and inspect social careservices in England, with services expected to meet the same minimumstandards.

Individual social care workers are regulated by and registered with theGeneral Social Care Council. The council produces codes of conduct andpractice, maintains a national register of workers and regulatestraining.

SCOTLAND

The Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care, better known as theCare Commission, is the agency responsible for regulating Scotland's15,000 adult and children's care services.
