Policy & Practice: Consultation of the week - Unclaimed assetsdistribution mechanism

What's in it?

In May, the Treasury revealed that unclaimed assets from dormant bank accounts could be used to fund youth facilities. This consultation sets out proposals for how the cash should be distributed and follows the initial consultation on the operation of the scheme, published in the spring (YPN, 23-29 May, p10).

Plans include:

Using The Big Lottery Fund as the main body to distribute cash to different causes, to take advantage of its UK-wide infrastructure and ability to handle assets on a large scale.

What people say about it:

John Bateman, chief executive of UK Youth, says: "The Big Lottery Fund has experience in doing these things and saves setting up a new body. We welcome anything that improves services for young people."
