Analysis: Policy - Funding - Service investment arrives at last

When Tony Blair spoke of investing in youth services in his speech to the Labour Party conference last year, youth professionals couldn't be blamed for thinking this was an appreciated nod to youth work, but unlikely to be accompanied by a huge amount of money. But the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, backed government rhetoric on the importance of youth services with promises of new investment in his pre-Budget report last month (YPN, 7-13 December 2005, p3).

Brown talked about an average figure of half a million pounds for every local authority in England to set up a "young people's fund", and also said the Government would try to invest unclaimed assets from banks and building societies in "youth and community facilities".
