Is this just about formal education and examination results? Yes, but then again, no. Yes, Playing for Success is targeted at underachieving pupils in schools and raising educational attainment. And yes, the quantitative part of this study is full of statistical analysis of impact on the various Key Stage and National Curriculum Assessment results. But the qualitative analysis offers some interesting broader reflections on learning and the impact of self-esteem and personal development.

Right - and what did Playing for Success involve? It was set up in 1997 and has involved teachers working with young people mainly from Years 6 to 9 at study centres based at top football clubs, and a wide variety of professional sports clubs. It offers a discrete programme of about 20 hours over 10 weeks and uses the medium of sport to address reading, sums and ICT.
