So were those press reports about tenfold increases in drug use correct? There is no doubt whatsoever that cannabis is now a more common aspect of young people's lives than it was 20 years ago. But there is a lot more to say and some of it is positive.

OK, let's have the facts about the research first. The Schools Health Education Unit has been using a questionnaire to find out about young people's health since the late 70s. Since 1987, the unit has asked questions about the use of illegal drugs, and more than 369,000 young people have replied during that time. This paper, which was published in early June, looks at the trends over that period.
