Next time a young person lights up a spliff in your youth centre, do not be persuaded by him or her that it has all of a sudden become legal.
To set the record straight: cannabis is not being legalised. Neither is it being decriminalised. Drug workers and many youth workers will know this, but the point is worth making bluntly because many young people may well be confused over forthcoming changes to the law.
That is certainly the line taken by John Currie, youth provision co-ordinator at specialist agency Turning Point ACAPS, which is working in Brixton at the Marcus Lipton Project on a Community Against Drugs-funded programme with young people who have been excluded from school.
