So is it farewell, probation officers?
Well it's certainly hello, offender managers. The re-designation comes about following the Carter report, a study by what the papers call "troubleshooting businessman Patrick Carter" into the way we punish, rehabilitate and supervise offenders.
So what will change? We will get a new structure from 1 June known as the National Offender Management Service, a merger of the Prison Service and Probation Service, which has been done successfully in places such as Canada and Denmark. It will be under the control of former Prison Service chief Martin Narey and aims to provide a seamless management of offenders.
