Schools across the UK are throwing off traditional ideas about what their playgrounds should look like, and are developing natural, sustainable and fun play areas. Rebecca Coombes investigates.

Eight years ago, the school grounds at Alexandra Infants School inBromley were so appalling that the problem was highlighted in theschool's Ofsted report. "It was a real issue because many of ourchildren don't have access to a garden," admits the head teacherMichelle Lewis.

Today, the view outside the classrooms couldn't be more different.

Improvements include seating in the shape of a dragonfly, totem poles,chimes, a finger-maze activity panel and a convex mirror, while anall-weather surface pitch means a previously out-of-bounds area can nowbe used all year. And one of the most popular features is a Buddy Stop,where children can stand to meet new play mates.
