Play strategies: Authorities must involve children

Children and young people should be involved every step of the way in forming local authority play strategies, says the body behind a new guide for London boroughs.

The Mayor of London's Guide to Preparing Play Strategies, published last week, was prepared for Ken Livingstone by London Play.

It follows consultation with play experts, local authorities and young service users.

Dr Ute Navidi, director of London Play, said the guide was intended to help local authorities ensure play was "firmly embedded" in their plans for children's services. "We hope it will get people thinking about how to involve children and young people at all stages," she said.

Navidi also said it was important to highlight the "huge role" of the voluntary and community sector in play provision.
