Tim Gill, who has worked for the council for nearly 10 years, is leaving in August to pursue consultancy opportunities.
He said: "We need to get play higher up the agenda. There are still many parts of the country where children don't have access to good play facilities. There are still problems with services being cut or being funded over the short-term without any guarantee of long-term sustainability."
During his time as director, he saw the first government funding for policy work into play. The council also recently successfully lobbied for changes to the Children Bill to reflect the importance of play in children's lives.
