Children's play: Culture department states commitment

The Government has insisted that children's play does not lose out from having to compete for attention within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport against events such as the 2012 Olympic bid.

Responding to a call from the outgoing director of the Children's Play Council, Tim Gill, for the responsibility for play to be moved to the education department, under the remit of children's minister Margaret Hodge, a spokesman for the DCMS insisted his department was fully committed to children's play.

He said it was in constant contact with other government bodies, including the Department for Education and Skills, about children's play, adding: "Every department has a number of issues of equal value. There are big issues like the Olympics but at the same time we have a unit working on children's play just like there would be a unit in the DfES.
