The survey of over 600 parents and 1,200 children aged seven to 12 was commissioned by the Children's Play Council (CPC), based at NCB, and The Children's Society. The organisations are concerned that parents and children are not playing together and may not know how.
"We know parents have a tough job," said CPC director Tim Gill. "We want to make their lives easier by helping them to enjoy the time they spend with their children.
Playful parenting is about putting to one side our adult cares, engaging with our children and simply having fun.'
To mark Playday 2004, which is supported by the British Toy and Hobby Association, events will be held across the country, with Trafalgar Square becoming a playground for the day.
