Play-friendly plan for the West End

Play is to take centre stage in plans to regenerate London's world-famous shopping thoroughfares.

London Play's chief executive, Dr Ute Navidi, has been included in a seven-strong panel of experts who will be consulted on the revamp of the Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street area in time for the 2012 London Olympics.

The Inclusive Design Panel's remit is to ensure the area becomes a model of inclusion for families and children.

Navidi said that she plans to champion the need for breastfeeding facilities, accessible toilets and more play opportunities.

"I will certainly try to ensure that wherever possible the panel are adding appropriate play features into the various designs for the area," she said. "Introducing natural elements such as sand, water and green areas will be more exciting and child-friendly than perhaps some of the existing street furniture," she added.
