Play: Charity attempts to stave off cuts

London Play is appealing to councils help it stave off plans for crippling cuts to children's groups across the capital.

The charity is fighting to reverse proposed cuts by London Councils,formerly the Association of London Government, which will be finalisednext month. Alan Sutton, London Play's policy and development worker'said: "Staff would be reduced to less than half because London Councilsprovides our core funding."

In September, London Councils gave a third of its 28m yearlygrants scheme back to councils (Children Now, 7-13 September).

But after protests it looked at changing its funding prioritiesinstead.

Fifteen areas related to children could lose out.
