Four indicators have been developed by the Children's Play Council, which hopes to pilot them from late spring as part of work funded by theDepartment of Culture Media and Sport and the new lottery programme forplay.
They will assess children's access to play provision, quality ofprovision, how much children use provision and play outdoors, andchildren's satisfaction with play provision.
Currently there is no way of judging performance on play although somecouncils are assessed against the Six Acre Standard guidance, developedby the National Playing Fields Association.
If the new performance indicators are successful then the play councilwill recommend they form part of all authorities' comprehensiveperformance assessments or joint area reviews, explained policy andresearch officer Issy Cole-Hamilton. This could help ensure ongoinginvestment in local play provision.
