Outcomes: Assessment model to aid authorities

Local authorities can now assess their performance across children's services by using a model devised by the National Foundation for Educational Research.

The Statistical Neighbour Benchmark Model, commissioned by theDepartment for Education and Skills, judges the performance ofchildren's services against key indicators such as infant mortality andteenage pregnancy.

The analysis is then compared to local authorities similar in terms oftheir socio-economic makeup and population density.

Tom Benton, a senior statistician at the foundation, said theOfsted-endorsed model "will help local authorities to get an idea of howthey are performing".
