Secondary schools are failing to involve parents

www.cypnow.co.uk/doc

Parents are put off from getting involved in secondary school activities because of a lack of communication with teachers and senior staff.

Research by the Department for Schools, Children and Families found many parents are involved heavily with primary school activities and have a close relationship with teachers. This includes volunteering with fundraising activities, helping with homework and joining parents, teachers and friends associations.

However, by the time children reach secondary school, this parental involvement drops off markedly. The research found secondary schools feel like a "different world" to parents, citing a lack of familiarity in comparison to primary schools.

Parents said they wanted to get involved and believed this would benefit their children's school life but were put off because schools were not welcoming to parents.
