In its strategy document Gaining Ground: Improving Progress in Coasting Secondary Schools, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) sets out how it plans to ensure schools whose pupils should do better given their ability can improve.
Around £40m in extra funding is being made available and the government wants to see the bulk spent on partnership working with neighbouring schools to share good practice and better extended school services.
The report says that the types of after-school activities it is keen to see coasting schools develop include book clubs, homework assistance, specific subject clubs, talks from outside speakers and visits to places such as museums.
