A funding package of £30m has been set aside to run yearlong pilots in Oldham and Suffolk, as well as offer funding to councils to target children without access. The money will also fund a quality badge scheme for suppliers of home computers.
Knight said: "The bottom line is that having home access to the internet or a computer is no longer an optional extra for school work, it is fast becoming essential."
The funding is part of a £300m package of measures to ensure every five- to 19-year-old has home computer and broadband access by 2011. It is estimated that a million children do not currently have broadband access.
