Around 35 per cent of all 13- to 19-year-olds in the area - 20,000 of the eligible population - voted in the Young Essex Assembly elections, compared with a 28 per cent turnout for the region's 2001 local elections.
Sixty-eight young people have been appointed on to the assembly, which will raise issues and provide feedback on youth services in the county.
All candidates volunteered to take part and attended training and selection days.
Young Essex Assembly's Stu Meese said: "We've handed the rule book over to the young people, so they can truly be represented in the area."
Voting took place between 12 and 16 January at polling stations in local secondary schools, town councils, libraries and Connexions centres.
