Participation: Gloomy forecast for youth vote turnout

1 min read

The estimated turnout, calculated from an ongoing series of interviews with 6,000 people of all ages, contrasts sharply with the 39 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds who voted in 2001.

In contrast,70 per cent of pensioners are expected to vote in the next election and the overall voter turnout is predicted to be 51 per cent.

Ben Page, director of Mori's Social Research Institute, said: "There's not much point in worrying about young people's views, because they don't bother voting."

He added: "We should be more worried about pensioners. Young people are pretty honest. They just don't think voting is that relevant. But pensioners think they have a duty to vote."
