Participation: Schools should get citizenship grants

CSV is calling on the Government to roll out the volunteering charity's Barclays New Futures programme, which it describes as a blueprint for helping young people reduce tensions in divided communities.

The programme provides one-year grants of 5,000 and two-year grants of 10,000 or 20,000 to help schools develop projects to tackle issues such as social isolation. Community action teams are formed, consisting of pupils and teachers helped by at least one community partner.

CSV Reports on Citizenship through Participation and Responsible Action, published this week, outlines the positive effects of the programme.
