Citizenship: Children should be politically aware

Citizenship education needs more than quick-fix cash to succeed and must immerse children in political processes, a charity claims.

Peter Hayes, director of Community Service Volunteers (CSV), said: "Developing citizenship skills needs a hard-edge approach like enabling young people to play an active part in political processes, such as shadowing council staff."

Investment alone may be seen as "money up front to get something going, which could fizzle out and not work," he added.

A new CSV report, Citizenship in the curriculum - two years on, quizzed teachers and pupils from 68 schools and marked two years of citizenship being on the national curriculum. A quarter of the 194 children felt more respect for the community.
