When Ealing council decided to hold a conference on disability and education with pupils as delegates, the organisers soon realised the planning of such an event was a huge task. Ruth MacConville highlights the key lessons learnt.

What's it like to have a disability and attend a mainstream school?Ealing council's special educational needs school service decided tohold a conference, entitled Powerful Voices, to enable young people tomake their opinions heard and to get their message across.

Two Year 5, 6 and 7 pupils from every school in the borough attended anda range of communication mechanisms were used, from debates to vocalgymnastics, while British Sign Language interpreters were available fordeaf pupils.

At the end of the day, the children discovered they had a voice and anopinion that counts, while we discovered that organising a conferencewhere children are the delegates is a daunting task. But, we also learntwhat needs to be in place when we repeat the experience later thisyear.
