Participation: Political pilot set to be rolled out in UK

Youth Act started in the US to encourage young people to take part in the democratic process. The Citizenship Foundation tested it in London schools two years ago and now hopes to offer it to more young people.

A spokeswoman for the foundation said: "We have had such positive feedback, and so many of the kids have won awards because of the skills the programme has given them."

Students from Willowfield and George Mitchell schools in Waltham Forest last week became the latest to embark on the scheme, funded mainly by a 34,000 Deutsche Bank grant.

The six-week programme, which culminates in a residential trip, teaches 11- to 19-year-olds how to achieve political or social change in their school, youth club or community.
