Joshua Buchanan is the 10-year-old editor and founder of KidzZone. He formed the scheme with his friend Jamie Cartwright, also aged 10, who is entertainment manager. Both are residents of social housing development Kidbrooke Village, and have been leading the enterprise since September.
"I wanted to start a newsletter when I noticed there wasn’t a lot of news-led information for kids, by kids," Joshua says. "It’s been a good experience and it’s given me confidence. I’ve learned how to interview, make a website and use surveys. My literacy and maths have also improved."
The venture secured funding and support from Greenwich Council and its Kidbrooke development partners Berkeley Homes, Southern Housing Group and ASRA Greater London Housing Association.
Joshua also approached businesses for support, offering online advertising space in return for grant funding. Ann Buchanan, Joshua’s mother, says: "The support he’s got has been astounding. Southern Housing has funded the web domain and Berkeley Homes finances the print version. SuperKidz Community Trust has agreed to hold the money for Joshua. The local school is offering publishing at a reduced rate. Everyone’s chipping in to make it a success."
