Participation: Home Office says Government must do more to engage youth

The report says the Government must do more if it is to engage young people and calls on local authorities to "consider reinstating" closed youth facilities.

It also warns against tokenism and says young people are interested in current affairs but cynical about politics.

Fiona Mactaggart, minister for civic renewal, said: "We need to give young people the chance to shape things. They might be less inclined to vote but that doesn't mean they aren't interested in being citizens."

Mactaggart said she hoped to apply the findings to the national youth volunteering strategy, currently being developed by the Government.

"Part of volunteering is to give young people a chance to shape their community," she said.
