Big Interview: A direct route to citizenship - Fiona Mactaggart, minister for civic renewal

"My citizenship education came from doing things that achieved changes," says Mactaggart. "The most effective one I can remember was when I was a student. I was very frustrated that despite many of the students in the English department being women, facilities were only available for men and we had to walk a long way to find ours."

She made some general representations that didn't get anywhere and in the end started using the gents. "We soon got facilities of our own," she says. "So I learned about ways of getting change and that you don't always get the change you want on your first try. Sometimes you need a little bit of direct action."
