The Foreign Office won praise for sending three young delegates to the general assembly for the first time last year, but decided not to do so at this year's event in September.
The decision has sparked a letter of protest from the British Youth Council, on behalf of the UK Youth Parliament, the Scottish Youth Parliament, Funky Dragon, the Northern Ireland Youth Forum and the UN Youth and Students Association UK.
Department officials argue that last year's event was a more fitting one to send young people to than this year's, as it coincided with the 10-year review of the UN's World Programme of Action for Youth. The department is attempting to compensate by advertising for an 18- to 24-year-old to attend the UN Commission for Social Development in February.
