Parents advised to widen pupil diets

Education
Parents need more advice on how to broaden young children's eating habits, according to a Scottish Government report.

The report examined a pilot scheme, in which 35,000 children in the first three years of primary education received free healthy meals for six months. A quarter of pupils were reluctant to eat the meals, which the research suggests is because they are "fussy eaters".

As a result, the report states: "The greatest impact on uptake might be realised through initiatives to enhance parents' skills in encouraging young children to eat a wider range of foods."

Last week, the Scottish Government said it would extend the scheme across the country by August 2010.
