Parenting: 34m announced for online support

A 34m initiative announced by junior children's minister Kevin Brennan last week will see parents use text messages and social networking web sites to hone their parenting skills.

The Parent Know-How initiative will target parents who may struggle tofind help such as parents of disabled children, fathers and those fromdisadvantaged communities.

The move will bring together existing services, such as parentinghelplines, and develop new ways for parents to get help such as textmessages or using Facebook-style social networking web sites.

Ministers say the move is based on research showing parents wanted inputfrom professional sources, and would prefer to receive this online.Brennan said: "We will provide help for parents when it suits thembest."
