This phenomenon of "social networking" has grown enormously over the past few years to the point where an estimated seven out of 10 young people are now using these web sites (see box out).
One of the longest-running social networking hubs is Friends Reunited, which lets people look up old schoolmates online. But the current crop of major networking sites, such as MySpace and Bebo, offer far more interactive features and have become hugely popular with young people. These sites allow them to create personal profiles, where they can describe themselves, likes and dislikes, upload photographs, add links to other sites, write blogs, and send instant messages or emails to other people's profiles.
