pamphlet encourages integration between old and young

Youth Work
Advice on intergenerational projects is to be sent to local authority children's professions this week as part of a joint initiative by charity 4Children and the older people's charity Counsel for Care.

The advice pamphlet 4All ages will offer ideas on how practitioners can bring young and old together to help them understand each other better.

The pamphlet suggests children's centres follow the example of the London Borough of Merton and run projects involving both young and old. It also highlights Manchester City Council's decision to create an intergenerational working strategy and employ a champion for intergenerational work.

Geethika Jayatilaka, deputy chief executive of 4Children, said 4All ages would help older people feel safer by increasing understanding and respect across the generations.

"We need to build bridges between generations, so the learning and experience is shared," she said. "If we can build those bridges, between family members and others, it would make for a more cohesive and understanding society."
