Outdoor play should be a public health priority

2 mins read Play
The closure of a popular adventure playground at Battersea Park in the London borough of Wandsworth last year hit the headlines when protestors occupied the site to delay demolition.

This direct action was backed by local parents and children, some of whom turned up with placards and banners urging the council to reconsider its decision. Their hope proved short-lived – the protestors were removed from the site after a couple of weeks and the demolition went ahead.

CYP Now's investigation into spending on play provision shows the Wandsworth closure was no one-off – in fact, Freedom of Information (FoI) responses reveal that a third of all councils have closed playgrounds between 2010 and 2013. While many of these closures are of unstaffed playgrounds, the FoI shows that adventure playgrounds have been decimated, resulting in many trained play professionals losing their jobs.
