Opinion: We need to win magistrates' support

Beyond the enormous value of just getting such a debate going, however, was the recurrent expression of concern by magistrates that, too often, they do not get enough information about the young people who come before them. This proclaimed "knowledge gap" exists both at the point of sentence and further down the track: magistrates evidently would like to know what has been the consequence of their decisions. They cannot, of course, be informed of every single case, but some examples would apparently be welcome. Furthermore, they recognised almost unanimously that young people were unlikely to turn a corner in their lives without appropriate and timely support.
